Here are some examples of the four types of tutors we offer and their hourly rates — Undergraduate Tutors, Graduate Tutors, Experienced Teachers and Professional Tutors, and Super Tutors.

Super Tutors

Cambridge attracts the world’s best academics: a select team of highly accomplished Super Tutors with many years’ outstanding teaching experience. Many of our Super Tutors have been Head of Department in at least one school. From £95 per hour.

Example of a Super Tutor

Claudia is an experienced teacher and has and M.A. in Classics from the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and a DPhil in Ancient Greek from the University of Oxford (Corpus Christi College).

I have been Head of Careers at Oxford High School for 3 years and a Classics teacher for 10 years. I used to be a university lecturer (Balliol College, Oxford, University of Melbourne and Monash University), then took up teaching Classics at secondary level with a strong interest in what lies ahead of our students, once they leave school. I have experience teaching Classics, Latin and Greek across all levels and making these subjects interesting and accessible to all.

During my time as lecturer I was heavily involved in admissions for Oxford and now organise Oxbridge seminars, practice admission interviews, medicine day conferences, help with gap year planning, advise on studying abroad, personal statements, work experience/volunteering.

Her referee writes:

  • Claudia is an extremely well-organised and accomplished individual. She has a love and enthusiasm for Classics which she transfers into her teaching. She has extensive and comprehensive knowledge and is always keen to support the students in their understanding. She is thorough in her lesson planning and marking and works well to tight schedules and deadlines.

Experienced Teachers and Professional Tutors

Professional tutors with years of teaching experience, in-depth subject and syllabus knowledge. Experts in building confidence to achieve. From £70 per hour.

Example of an Experienced Tutor

Ben is a full-time tutor with over 6 years’ experience teaching subjects from Common Entrance level through to Undergraduate.

I tutor both Ancient History and Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A level, as well as offering undergraduate tutoring and essay preparation, including dissertation/thesis editing. I have a thorough knowledge of all the potential module choices, allowing you the freedom to pick and choose those that most pique your interest and suit your skillset, whether that be the Peloponnesian Wars, Alexander the Great, or perhaps even Roman Iconography. You require no previous experience to undertake these courses, only an enthusiasm to learn about some of the most important characters and events in history, guided by classic texts from Herodotus to Tacitus.

My lessons are welcoming and engaging, and I encourage students to take charge during their classes, which builds academic confidence and interest. Our sessions are full of conversation and debate, stimulating their communication skills ready for interviews, as well as providing argumentative ideas for their persuasive writing tests.

Whilst I always build an individual plan around each student’s needs, I will normally take a dual approach. In the initial sessions, I try not to focus on rote tasks, but rather encourage pupils to expand and experiment, going beyond the standard syllabus and maximising their potential. Once exams draw nearer, the attention shifts to exam techniques, with a heavy emphasis on answer style and practice papers, so on assessment day they feel a sense of confidence and familiarity.

I have a DPhil from Oxford University, my thesis discussing the cultural and religious significance of dreams in ancient Greece. Before that I completed my Master of Studies (Distinction), also at Oxford, specialising in areas including historiography, epigraphy, and Greek religion. And my academic career began at St. Andrews, where I received an MA (Hons) First Class in Ancient History, completing all the core modules including 5th Century Greek History, the Roman Republic, and the Imperial Age.

I have always been a keen writer. Not only academically – the pinnacle of which was my Oxford DPhil thesis (a snip at 100,000 words) – but also publishing my own fiction novels, and in my professional career I wrote pieces that were passed all the way to senior government.

Recent reviews from parents and students:

  • I am currently studying for my A levels. As I am home-schooled I needed a tutor who was able to tutor me on a regular basis via Skype. Ben has been and is still tutoring me four times a week for two hour sessions each. The subjects I’m taking with him are Classical Civilisation, Ancient History and English. Further studies of mine are in Ancient Greek and Latin. Both of which, if I need help, Ben always finds the time to help me in these subjects too.

  • I have found Ben to be an excellent tutor. His lessons are engaging and highly informative. He is a precise tutor, meaning the marking of homework given can be quite tough but I like it this way as I’m learning a lot more, and understanding my mistakes enables me to achieve the best I can. Ben makes sure that I understand the materials covered before moving on to the next chapter.

  • To sum it up I honestly can say that I have found the best tutor for my educational requirements. He is extremely supportive, caring, and strives for his students to reach their full potential. I am confident to go into my exams next year with the knowledge that I can do very well.

  • I was looking for an Ancient Greek tutor for our son for CE as his school didn’t offer it. My son has dyslexia and ASD and I had trouble finding a tutor who would work with him. Ben has been amazing. Kind, patient and understanding. Was willing to ‘give it a go’ and completely ‘got’ our son. Ben has been teaching him for the past 18 months. Our son had no prior experience of Greek. He recently took his entrance exams for Winchester College and scored 85% for papers 2 & 3. Not too shabby! I think we were very lucky to find Ben. Not everyone is prepared to work with kids with SEND. I would wholeheartedly recommend him.

Another example of an Experienced Tutor

Victoria Fendel is a professional tutor with many years experience.

I did my BA in Classical civilisations (majors: Greek, Latin) at the University of Basel and my MA in Ancient Greek and Ancient Near East Studies (archaeology and languages) also at the University of Basel yet spending one semester at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Free University of Berlin during an ERASMUS exchange during my MA. I then completed my DPhil in Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford (Lady Margaret Hall) with a thesis on Classical Lingusitics. Last but not least, I did an MPhil in Theoretical and Applied Lingustics at the University of Cambridge (Peterhouse) with a thesis on French Linguistics.

In addition, I acquired teaching qualifications for a university context (SEDA PDF) and a non-university context (Teach English as a Foreign Language). I taught Biblical Hebrew at the University of Basel, Greek and Latin at the University of Oxford, Classical civilisations at Oxford Summer Courses and English as a Second Language at two schools in Kathmandu, Nepal during a volunteer placement and at Oxford Summer Courses.

A recent review from a parent:

  • Victoria is inspiring our daughter to learn more enthusiastically. Five stars!

Cambridge and Oxford Graduate Tutors

Tutors with degrees from the universities of Cambridge and Oxford — sometimes Masters or PhD/DPhil candidates — with proven track-records of academic success. From £60 per hour.

Example of a Graduate Tutor

Nick has a Master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Oxford (Linacre College), and a Classics degree from King’s College, Cambridge.

I graduated from Cambridge with a First – with a focus on language and literature in both Latin and Greek; and was awarded two academic awards as a result. I then studied at Linacre College, Oxford, achieving a Merit in my Social & Cultural Anthropology (MA). I started tutoring six years ago, and have helped many students with both GCSE and A levels. I have worked with children on their Common Entrance exams, 11+ and 13+, GCSE, all the way up to A level.

I like to encourage my students to use the knowledge they already have, work out the specific requirements of their questions and then work to solve the problems themselves. I encourage a relaxed environment where questions and investigation are encouraged, and in which both exam technique, and learning techniques are front and centre – so that each child is encouraged to work out how they best think/learn, how to compensate/make the most of this, and therefore how to best take ownership for their own achievement and best excel. I sang with Magdalen College Choir while studying at Oxford.

Another example of a Graduate Tutor

Laura is an undergraduate Classicist, and experienced Latin tutor. Here is a little more about her:

I am an undergraduate Classicist at St. Anne’s College, Oxford University. I study Latin, Ancient Greek, Ancient History and Philosophy and recently gained a high 2:1 in my second year exams. My A levels were French, Latin, Classical Civilisation and Mathematics in which I achieved top grades. I am experienced in tutoring both younger students, who want to develop their basic understanding and those who are older and preparing for exams. At university, I am frequently involved in theatre, both on stage and backstage. I am able to use my performance skills to deliver exciting and engaging lessons to pupils of all ages. I have tutored Latin at a local primary school and gave one to one and group lessons to improve students’ grasp of grammar and texts by using interactive and fun activities. I have also tutored older students in Latin to prepared them for end of year exams. I ran Classics Club at school, during which I gave one to one and group coaching and mentoring during club meets, as well as overseeing the club in general. I also supervised Year 7 Drama Club, organising sessions to teach students techniques in an exciting way.

Her University tutor writes this about Laura:

  • Laura has been an excellent student for me. Her work is always of a high standard, and she has a good ability to synthesise her thoughts into coherent and concise arguments, both in her written work and in our general discussions in tutorials. Her ability to gain knowledge is of a very high standard, as well as being able to develop her knowledge as she progresses in her degree. Laura has a particular knack for asking the pertinent questions and interrogating the central problem of a particular text or historical issue, which will transfer particularly well when engaged in tutoring. She is also inquisitive, which will be an essential asset in drawing thoughts and responses from her own students in class. Laura is also a very keen participant in outreach activities with a wider community. In particular, her role as the second messenger in the Oxford Greek Play’s rendition of Euripides’ Bacchae shows an interest in bringing the ancient world to life for a modern audience. This is a particularly good trait, and a proven skill of being able to engage with people outside your immediate discipline, which is essential in tutoring. I have no hesitation in giving her my recommendation.

Cambridge and Oxford Undergraduate Tutors

Academically outstanding, and selected for their natural teaching ability, they are excellent role models and mentors. Feedback from pupils and parents is always exceptional. From around £50 per hour.

Example of an Undergraduate Tutor

James is a third-year Classicist at St Benet’s Hall, Oxford.

I studied Maths, Further Maths, Latin and Classical Greek at A level. I have been tutoring GCSE Maths with the Coronavirus Tutoring Initiative and with local students, and at school I volunteered at a French club for local primary school students. I am confident tutoring Classics, Latin and Greek at all levels from 11+ through to A-Level. When not playing the trombone, I enjoy cooking and teaching myself new languages!

Another example of an Undergraduate Tutor

Emily is reading Economics and Management at the University of Oxford (Pembroke College). She is an experienced tutor of Economics.

I am extremely passionate about Economics, and enjoy the theoretical literature and real-life scenarios that this subject involves. Economics includes mathematics, modelling and essay writing; these are skills I enjoy teaching as part of this tutoring initiative. My passion for learning and ambition meant I left college with top grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics and Physics.

I believe the key to my success was understanding the topics studied in detail, while ensuring this detail was clear and concise in my brain to carry me through exams. I achieved this with effective teaching and revision, skills I’d love to develop in my students. I enjoy rowing and running my own business in my free time, so I believed successful learning should be efficient, giving you time to expand yourself beyond just the textbook. I would be happy to help my students with their time management, as well as their academia.

Another example of an Undergraduate Tutor

Nikhil is an experienced tutor of Economics and Maths. After two years of Economics at Cambridge, he has switched to a Maths degree, making him well-placed to teach in both subject areas.

I am a mathematician at St John’s College, Cambridge, specialising in Methods and Stochastics. I have completed two years of Economics at Cambridge with a focus on Econometrics (specifically Bayesian and Markov-Switching Inference). I am a tutor in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and Economics up to A level, as well as providing assistance with entrance examinations: ECAA preparation for Economics at Cambridge, and general Personal Statement and Interview preparation. I am caring, friendly, and professional. I am a keen member of the Cambridge Sports network, having played rugby and boxed for the University.
