Super Tutors

Cambridge attracts the world’s best academics: a select team of highly accomplished Super Tutors with many years’ outstanding teaching experience. Many of our Super Tutors have been Head of Department in at least one school. From £95 per hour.

Example of a Super Tutor

Sally is a passionate and experienced teacher of History and Politics, with a proven track record of outstanding lessons and excellent exam results.

I am an Oxford-educated Historian, an experienced teacher and experienced tutor. I therefore have a wide range of highly relevant subject and skills-based experience, ideal for tutoring pupils in preparation for their GCSE and A level examinations, as well as preparing students for Oxbridge applications and interviews. Further to this, I am an AQA A level history examiner with experience in marking both examination and coursework components, making me particularly well suited to tutoring students who are following this A level history course.

As a teacher, I have a proven track record of excellent exam results at both GCSE and A level over the last 7 years. As a tutor I have supported students in meeting and exceeding their target grades and securing university places at Russell Group and Oxbridge universities. I place particular focus on developing the written skills of my students, allowing them to write analytically and using a clear structure in response to essay and source-based questions. I have a breadth of historical knowledge so can confidently support pupils in consolidating their subject knowledge, and my years of teaching experience have afforded me a good understanding of effective exam preparation and revision strategies.

You will find me friendly and personable with high expectations, and a deep commitment to helping my students reach their full potential.

Recent reviews:

  • Sally is a truly exceptional tutor. She is not only technically superb in terms of her subject knowledge but she has also three most valuable personal assets that set her decisively apart from other teachers. Firstly, she is a great communicator and has a rare ability to impart her knowledge in an accessible, simple (although never simplistic) and methodological way. Secondly, she has a natural gift for detecting weaknesses promptly and providing targeted support in the areas that are lacking knowledge or confidence. Thirdly, she is highly experienced in working with pupils under pressure – Sally possesses both an instinctive empathy for students stressed about their workload, and an innate ability to tailor her approach to her pupil’s personality infusing a sense of calm, control, empowerment and self-assurance.

  • Sally applies high standards not just to her students but importantly to her own work. She is highly organised and plans ahead, foreseeing potential difficulties before they arise making sure that these never materialise. She is very responsive and hard working. Her comments to pupils are clear, concise and carefully thought through; her reports to parents thorough and exhaustive. In all aspects of her work Sally’s attention to detail is immaculate.

  • As a real bonus (although one is truly not needed in her case!), Sally is very familiar with public exam board expectations having worked as an exam board moderator. She is highly conversant not only with the technical exam requirements but also has the experience of knowing how these are implemented in practice, adapting her approach to achieving personal academic heights when it comes to grades. Her work, however, is not simply paper results driven. Exceptionally, she also leaves her students an invaluable legacy of knowledge of how to analyse and tackle problems as well as developing in her pupils an inquisitive yet critical mind – a rare goal in today’s grade driven environment. Sally is a real gem of a teacher and I cannot speak highly enough of her tutoring.

Experienced Teachers and Professional Tutors

Professional tutors with years of teaching experience, in-depth subject and syllabus knowledge. Experts in building confidence to achieve. From £70 per hour.

Example of an Experienced Tutor

Ben is a professional tutor, experienced in teaching History.

I tutor both Ancient History and Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A level, as well as offering undergraduate tutoring and essay preparation, including dissertation/thesis editing. I have a thorough knowledge of all the potential module choices, allowing you the freedom to pick and choose those that most pique your interest and suit your skillset, whether that be the Peloponnesian Wars, Alexander the Great, or perhaps even Roman Iconography. You require no previous experience to undertake these courses, only an enthusiasm to learn about some of the most important characters and events in history, guided by classic texts from Herodotus to Tacitus.

My lessons are welcoming and engaging, and I encourage students to take charge during their classes, which builds academic confidence and interest. Our sessions are full of conversation and debate, stimulating their communication skills ready for interviews, as well as providing argumentative ideas for their persuasive writing tests.

Whilst I always build an individual plan around each student’s needs, I will normally take a dual approach. In the initial sessions, I try not to focus on rote tasks, but rather encourage pupils to expand and experiment, going beyond the standard syllabus and maximising their potential. Once exams draw nearer, the attention shifts to exam techniques, with a heavy emphasis on answer style and practice papers, so on assessment day they feel a sense of confidence and familiarity.

I have a DPhil from Oxford University, my thesis discussing the cultural and religious significance of dreams in ancient Greece. Before that I completed my Master of Studies (Distinction), also at Oxford, specialising in areas including historiography, epigraphy, and Greek religion. And my academic career began at St Andrews, where I received an MA (Hons) First Class in Ancient History, completing all the core modules including 5th Century Greek History, the Roman Republic, and the Imperial Age.

I have always been a keen writer. Not only academically – the pinnacle of which was my Oxford DPhil thesis (a snip at 100,000 words) – but also publishing my own fiction novels, and in my professional career I wrote pieces that were passed all the way to senior government.

Recent reviews from parents and students:

  • I am currently studying for my A levels. As I am home-schooled I needed a tutor who was able to tutor me on a regular basis via Skype. Ben has been and is still tutoring me four times a week for two hour sessions each. The subjects I’m taking with him are Classical Civilisation, Ancient History and English. Further studies of mine are in Ancient Greek and Latin. Both of which, if I need help, Ben always finds the time to help me in these subjects too.

  • I have found Ben to be an excellent tutor. His lessons are engaging and highly informative. He is a precise tutor, meaning the marking of homework given can be quite tough but I like it this way as I’m learning a lot more, and understanding my mistakes enables me to achieve the best I can. Ben makes sure that I understand the materials covered before moving on to the next chapter.

  • To sum it up I honestly can say that I have found the best tutor for my educational requirements. He is extremely supportive, caring, and strives for his students to reach their full potential. I am confident to go into my exams next year with the knowledge that I can do very well.

  • I was looking for an Ancient Greek tutor for our son for CE as his school didn’t offer it. My son has dyslexia and ASD and I had trouble finding a tutor who would work with him. Ben has been amazing. Kind, patient and understanding. Was willing to ‘give it a go’ and completely ‘got’ our son. Ben has been teaching him for the past 18 months. Our son had no prior experience of Greek. He recently took his entrance exams for Winchester College and scored 85% for papers 2 & 3. Not too shabby! I think we were very lucky to find Ben. Not everyone is prepared to work with kids with SEND. I would wholeheartedly recommend him.

Cambridge and Oxford Graduate Tutors

Tutors with degrees from the universities of Cambridge and Oxford — sometimes Masters or PhD/DPhil candidates — with proven track-records of academic success. From £60 per hour.

Example of a Graduate Tutor

Oscar is a History graduate of St Hugh’s College, Oxford.

I have many years of experience of tutoring in London, Oxford and online. Always with a friendly, encouraging and flexible approach, I tutor all levels and abilities, tailoring my sessions to your wishes and integrating ample time for key student evaluation and reflection. Setting key targets is important for structured study, but I’m keen to encourage active learning, and so will always be happy to speak about ongoing progress between tutoring sessions. I also regularly advise tutees and their families on the Oxbridge application process, and offer practice interviews too!

I won the Julia Wood History Essay Prize at St Hugh’s College. I have 3 A* grades at A-level in History (100%), Latin (96%), Politics (97%) and an A in AS-level Mathematics (99%). I also hold 10 A star grades at iGCSE/GCSE. I have achieved the ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction in both Piano and Violin. I was School Captain at Alleyn’s School, in London, and while at Oxford I was the Editor-in-Chief of Cherwell, the university newspaper, the St. Hugh’s JCR Secretary and a member of the Oxford Union. I’m also a keen footballer and tennis player, avid Manchester United fan, and aspiring linguist.
