Super Tutors
Cambridge attracts the world’s best academics: a select team of highly accomplished Super Tutors with many years’ outstanding teaching experience. Many of our Super Tutors have been Head of Department in at least one school. From £95 per hour.
Example of a Super Tutor
David is an experienced teacher of Maths and Physics.
Until 2016 a Mathematics teacher at Cheltenham Ladies’ College (CLC), I am a qualified mathematician and physicist with extensive experience in teaching and tutoring at all levels from KS3 to A levels to university level. I tailor my style to suit the needs of each student. At CLC, I successfully coached – for the first time in the school’s history – the Senior Level team that won the Regional level competition of the UK Mathematics Trust. I also started and ran the Euler Society for gifted Sixth Formers, covering an exciting spectrum of topics. At Loretto School, I ran the Riemann Society for students interested in mathematics outside and beyond the normal curriculum and also prepared students for individual and group United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) competitions – with some success!
At all stages in my teaching career, I have tutored privately in mathematics. I am very enthusiastic about mathematics and I have helped many tutees develop in confidence and proficiency. I have a First Class degree in Physics from University College London and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Imperial College London.

All five sessions with David were hugely productive. His clear teaching methods, patient calmness and encouragement have really paid off and will hopefully reap rewards in June! He was also always punctual and a total pleasure to have around. 5 star service! Many thanks indeed, we would definitely use him again if required.

I have been very much enjoying working with David as he simply is an amazing teacher. Within only a few lessons I have covered almost all the material from September up till now. I have been struggling a lot in class due to rushed explanations by my Maths teacher but David makes all the material easy to understand. Because of his tutoring I regained confidence in Math. I am very grateful to work with him.

David is a delightful person and we’re so glad he’s teaching our son – they seem to click really well and our son wants to do well for David. He always seems upbeat, encouraging and really enthusiastic about both what he’s teaching and the teaching itself. Really great!
Another example of a Super Tutor
David is an outstanding mathematician and teacher.
I am a qualified, experienced Maths teacher living in Oxford, with a real enthusiasm for teaching my subject, and a proven track record of success.
I have taught Maths in schools for over 20 years, 14 of them at a well-known independent school in Oxford, and have been Head of Maths in two schools. I have prepared pupils for exams in GCSE, IGCSE, Ad Maths, A-level Maths, A-level Further Maths, IB Maths HL, IB Maths SL and Studies. I have prepared pupils for scholarship exams at independent schools including Eton and Winchester. I have been an examiner for A-level public exams, and I set exams for a national Common Entrance exam board. I have prepared pupils for Oxbridge entrance, including MAT, PAT and STEP tuition, and giving guidance on what to read and interview practice; and feedback on many a UCAS personal statement. I have a BSc degree with distinction in Mathematics, and a BSc(Hons) degree in Mathematics, and a professional teaching qualification.
Success in Maths is linked to confidence. Confidence is easy to restore with individual tuition, where we work at the student’s pace with gentle encouragement, clear explanations and guided practice using appropriate examples. With an experienced and qualified teacher, students get someone who already knows what they may find hard, and when to speed up and or slow down. Patience and praise are important, so that students feel comfortable to ask questions and develop deeper understanding.

David’s personal and thorough teaching style has been without a doubt a deciding factor towards my being accepted to study Mathematics at Imperial. He is an excellent teacher and a life mentor who will undoubtedly guide any student towards reaching his/her full potential, inspiring confidence and ultimately excellence.

We are absolutely thrilled to let you know that our daughter got an A in Maths!! She is very pleasantly surprised. Thank you so much for the work you did with her and for giving her the confidence to give it a go and transform where she was after Mocks to an A. She got her place to study at university and we are delighted for her.

David is an exceptional Maths tutor who very quickly understood what our son required and was able to get the absolute best out of him. Lessons were not only challenging but also fun making the whole round experience and extremely positive one. I would highly recommend David as a Maths tutor.
Experienced Teachers and Professional Tutors
Professional tutors with years of teaching experience, in-depth subject and syllabus knowledge. Experts in building confidence to achieve. From £70 per hour.
Example of an Experienced Tutor
Ben is an experienced teacher of Maths.
I studied Mathematics up to Master’s level at the University of Oxford, graduating in 2017. During my time at Oxford I specialised in Pure Mathematics, particularly number theory, which I completed a thesis on in my Master’s year. Outside the classroom, I spent my time in Oxford working for the university’s undergraduate mathematics journal, to which I contributed expository papers. After graduating I moved into teaching, starting out as a teacher in London before undertaking a PGCE in Wales and then moving to Oxford to teach at Magdalen College School. At MCS I was mostly responsible for A-level teaching, and I taught both Single and Further Maths to Sixth Form classes, as well as KS3 classes. I loved the challenge of teaching in the highly academic environment of the school and I look forward to tutoring students who enjoy pushing themselves to an equally high standard.
My philosophy for tutoring is based around imparting a love of the subject and a focus on developing real understanding. I am never satisfied in teaching by rote, preferring instead to instil a true appreciation of the subject through careful motivation and problem-based learning. I am a veteran problem-solver, and I love using challenging, interesting, and often even open, problems to motivate the material that I teach. I have coached students preparing for Maths Challenges and Olympiad competitions, and I have personal experience with the Oxford MAT exam – I love the depth and variety of the problems these contain, and I believe that they can be used to help students at a wide range of levels develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for Mathematics.
Another example of an Experienced Tutor
Dylan is an experienced professional tutor of Maths and Physics.
I am a professional Maths and Physics tutor with experience teaching both online and in the classroom. I studied at New College, Oxford graduating with a First Class Masters degree in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics. Working primarily in Oxford, I have tutored students in Physics, Maths and Further Maths at GCSE, A level, and IB. I also have teaching experience with larger groups, working as a Physics teacher for A level and IB at an independent school in Oxford, where I led additional sessions for students participating in the UK Physics Olympiad, and those taking the Physics Admissions Test (PAT) for Oxford. Through my work in Oxford-based summer schools, I have given intensive one-on-one sessions on the Maths Admissions Test (MAT) for Oxford and STEP papers for Cambridge, Warwick and Imperial, as well as providing mock Oxbridge interviews and personal statement sessions.
My teaching style is patient and friendly, but engaging. I believe strongly that it is essential to observe the learning process of the student in real time; tutoring is not lecturing, and we, as tutors, have the ability to nudge students in the right direction when they run into obstacles and to streamline the often messy experience of mastering a new technique or fully understanding a new concept. In my free time I enjoy running and climbing and am a keen musician, playing piano and trombone, and singing tenor in my local choir.
Cambridge and Oxford Graduate Tutors
Tutors with degrees from the universities of Cambridge and Oxford — sometimes Masters or PhD/DPhil candidates — with proven track-records of academic success. From £60 per hour.
Example of a Graduate Tutor
James is a Mathematics and Statistics graduate of the University of Oxford (Brasenose College). He is an experienced tutor of Maths at all levels.
I have over five years of Maths tuition experience from GCSE and A level through to the MAT and STEP Oxbridge entrance exams. I also have experience working with 11+ and 13+ pupils who are not being stretched by their Maths curriculum.
My passions are Maths and teaching. The key to teaching is finding the correct balance between exploring and explaining content and then asking more questions of the students as we go deeper into the topic. In my tutorials, I gently stretch students by posing progressively more challenging questions to see if they can fill in the gaps themselves, while being very receptive to the student’s needs and making the jumps slightly smaller if necessary to ensure a positive experience. This approach, together with helping students to spot connections between different areas of Maths, builds confidence and resilience when solving problems which is not just essential for Maths but is also an important life skill.
Outside of academics, I enjoy listening to music and playing the piano, drums and accordion. I am also a cox for the Brasenose College Boat Club.
Some recent reviews from parents and students:
-
An outstanding tutor. Responsive, encouraging, supportive and kind. Thanks, James, for all your help.
-
James was such a great help with my Maths A level. He was patient and always made me feel comfortable asking questions when we were going over topics I had found difficult in class and his explanations were always very thorough. I always walked away from our sessions much more confident about my Maths than before and occasionally having explored interesting material that went slightly beyond the specification.

James is helping my son prepare for his STEP exams. According to my son, James has been teaching methods for solving problems in a similar way and standard in which they did on the Cambridge STEP day. James “knows his stuff”, is friendly and teaches well. My son looks forward to the sessions, has advanced in this Maths and feels more confident afterwards.
